Free range explained
Don't be fooled into buying farm fresh eggs or barn eggs (even from the farm gate or a farmer's market) as there is no guarantee that these hens will have had any access to the outside world at all. Often these hens are kept in overcrowded conditions with light supplied artificially. They can be fed on rations containing unnatural added ingredients to conteract their unhealthy artificial environment, encouraging them to produce more or grow at a faster rate (albeit against the odds).
The only way to guarantee a more traditional and natural outdoor system is to buy free-range or organic. All the eggs we sell are free-range and our hens enjoy minimum stocking rates both inside and outside, whilst also having adequate access to feed and water. These standards are set and we are regulated. Our hens are well cared for and produce a higher quality, more nutritious and tastier egg.
The best way to guarantee freshness is to buy direct, therefore minimising the time that your eggs are in transit (those food miles again!)
The same story applies to all poultry systems and products (minimise food miles to maximise taste)
